It has also never been afraid to spawn an extra genre here and there – a little horror, fantasy, mystery, character study and then… dystopian science fiction, or a touch of western. What makes this issue such a positive debut, though, isn't that Lemire and Sorrentino measure up to previous works"though they certainly do. It is everyone and it is no one. Over the past few years, more and more comics have failed or bombed on the second issue making it extremely difficult to buy into a story with only one sampling available. Gideon Falls #27 is a nearly perfect finale to the story that's been introduced and examined for the past three years. There are some open questions, but they don't take anything away from this epic book. The suspense and level of fear Lemire crafts are impeccable and wonderfully transferred by artist Andrea Sorrentino. It's largely well-drawn, though there are consistency problems with some characters (a common problem when the artist's reliance on photo reference includes some gaps in said reference). That has been the case for me with Redlands, Saga, and Lazuras. Overall, as the first Image Comics book i have read, this was awesome! It is unclear just what kind of story we may be in for with this series, but it is clear that story will prove interesting and well-told, both textually and visually. While it seems partially empty, it ends exactly as it should—surrounded in a shroud of mystery, leaving you wanting just a little bit more. It's unlikely that anyone that picks up Gideon Falls is going to be disappointed by it, in fact, it'll probably start a lot of conversations when it hits shelves in March.
